Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 02/06/2011: Change Up Tactics

Have you ever been out in a tournament and discovered that the pattern and honey hole you found while prefishing was not working? So what do you do? Here's a few words of advice that may just help you fill your livewells.

1- Work the area with a variety of lures. If they were hitting weightless worms and nothing is biting change it up to a 1/8 to 1/4 ounce Texas rig. The change in feeding habits may have been due to the weather and now their on the bottom feeding instead of the top to mid level depths.

2- Use your past experience in fishing the season and types of cover. For instance, in the spring look for prespawn areas and spawning flats. Work the sandy pockets and weed edges with rattlin cranks, spinnerbaits and Texas rigged plastics.

In the summer go deep and seek cuts, river channels and humps in deep water using a Carolina rig, drop shot or deep diving crankbait.

3- Move a 100 yards in either direction following the weedline or river channel or cut. The fish may have simply moved due to baitfish, wind or weather. This is very important as fish don't often move to far from your prefishing area.

4- Go for broke and change tactics entirely such as moving into thick cover if they aren't on the weed edge. Go deep instead of shallow i.e. just mix it up until the fish tell you how they want it.

So when it gets tough out there, give these tips a try and you may surprise yourself when you limit out. Until next time, Tight Lines and come back for more tips that will have you doing more catching with less fishing.
