Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 04/23/09: My Personal Favorite, The Improved Clinch Knot

Most of today's professional bass fishermen use the Palomar knot. This is a great knot with a knot strength of 91%. The main issue I have with this knot is that it takes me quite a bit of time to tie it and you do have to loop the lure back through the knot which can make it even more difficult.

My preferred knot is the improved clinch knot. I learned it when I was quite young and it has only let me down when I didn't tie it properly. You need at least 7 twists to be effective and leave some tag to allow for a small amount of slippage. It has a breaking strength of 84-89% of the line strength, so it is very comparable to the Polamar.

If you like to tie a quick and reliable knot, use the improved clinch. On the other hand, if you want maximum strength give the Palomar a try. Give this website a good look over on how to tie them at http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php then come back here so you can learn to do more catching with less fishing :)
