Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 06/14/09: Carolina Rig for the Dog Days of Summer

It's summertime and the water surface temperatures often hit the low 90's in Florida during the heat of the day. So what can you do to find and catch those sweltering bass? Go for the Carolina rig and fish those deep holes and ledges.

The summer period often finds bass following feeding routes that starts on shallow flats in the early morning hours. As the surface temperature warms, the bass will migrate to the deep holes and ledges. The key to using the Carolina rig is to find these ledges/holes along the migration routes.

A nice way to help find the key areas is to watch your depthfinder and look for schools of baitfish especially along a drop off. Throw a marker out when you encounter this type of condition and start using your Carolina rig.

How do you rig a Carolina Rig? Well, a basic video and picture can be found in one of my previous articles by clicking here.

Once your rig is ready, cast all around the marker until you get a bite and mentally note where the strike came from in relation to the marker. This is a key point since fish often relate to small sub structure such as wood, rock, vegetation or even shell beds. In fact there may be a school of fish using that sub structure.

So on your next fishing outing during a hot day, go deep with the Carolina rig.
