Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 07/07/2010: The Hot Days of Summer

The summertime can be a very difficult season for bass fishing. The high temperatures and muggy atmosphere can bring even the most avid anglers to their knees especially if the fish aren't biting.

So what can you do to make it more bearable? Here's a few tips to turn those dog days of summer into "hot fishing" days:

1- Go early! Get the boat on the water before sunrise and get off before noon. The fish will be most active the 1st two to three hours anyhow.

2- Drink lots of fluid especially water. Load your cooler with water or Gatorade and try to avoid those caffeine drinks as they can aid in dehydration since they promote active kidneys.

3- Wear a straw hat! It's often cooler and provides more shade than a ball cap.

4- Use a lot of sunscreen, 50+ UV protection for the southern states.

5- Bring a minnow bucket to give yourself a nice shower when you really start to bake.

6- Wet that shirt by dunking it in the water and wringing it out then take a spin running the big motor. Nothing like wind and water to cool off.

7- Fish shallow early then move deep as the sun rises higher on the horizon.

If you follow these suggestions those hot summer days can become memorable big fish outings.

Until next time Tight Lines!
