Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 07/19/2010: Mark Your Spots by Using Your GPS

I just relearned a lesson from many years ago and it's concerning fishing your old fishing areas. I have been fishing a local lake for several weekends over the last month and a half and have not been able to locate any fish with a good concentration. This last weekend I turned on my GPS and decided to try some older areas that produced several years ago.

I ventured upon a spot showing Marker 220 and on the second cast I hooked up with a nice 2 1/2 pounder. I immediately tossed out a yellow float and Anna and I worked the marker. About 3 casts later I lipped another nice bass at about 3 pounds. The bass were located on a 10 -13 foot ledge bordering 20 feet of water. There was scattered submerged timber in many areas and baitfish blossomed on the fishfinder.

The lesson is to give your old spots a try when nothing else seems to work and look for baitfish on or near those spots. On a colored fishfinder tightly schooled baitfish will show up as huge red balls on the screen and is a real key in determining the likelihood for success.

So the next time your on fish don't forget to mark the spot on your GPS 'cause you will never know when it will come handy in the future.

Until next time, read my other tips and I'm sure you'll do more catching with less fishing.
