Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 08/08/2010: When Wind Acts Like Current

When wind blows along points, into weedbeds or even parallel to the shoreline fish it like you would fish current. The key to success is to cast into the wind in most cases and work the lure back with the wind.

Wind creates small currents in lakes and creates an environment similar to fishing river currents. Bass will often face into the wind setting up ambush areas downwind looking upwind for baitfish that are carried into their lair.

Casting downwind will often present the lure behind the bass and the lure can spook them in this presentation style. Casting upwind will guide the bait and bring it's presence towards the fishes head which often induces fierce strikes.

Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, soft plastics and just about any lure should be cast upwind and retrieved downwind toward structure and weedbeds. Vary the speed of the retrieve to find out how the bass wants the bait.

So next time your out on the lake, think upwind and you probably will add a few more fish to your livewell.
