Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 10/08/09: Fall Fishing for Schooling Bass

Fall is the time for bass to be getting ready for the winter ahead. During this period the surface lake temperatures drop which send shad on a migration toward shallower waters. The shad migration also invokes their predators to follow including the largemouth bass.

During this transition phase bass will school and attack the shad on the surface. Finding these top feeding predators can often lead to a livewell full of fish in a matter of minutes. Keys in finding these areas can often be simple visual cues such as seeing seagulls diving into the water after the baitfish and a frothing of the surface created by the feeding fish. Another key is to find shallower flats bordering deep water such as river or creek channels.

Once the fish are located a variety of techniques can work depending on the activity of the bass. If the bass are busting the surface, try a topwater or hard/soft jerkbait. You may also want to try a rattling crankbait in the 1/4 to 1/2 ounce sizes.

If the bass have stopped the surface activity, go for a deep diving crankbait such as a DT 12-16 shadrap in the shad color. You can also mix in a Carolina rig with a straight tailed worm working the flat and underwater drops.

Always be sure to GPS and mark the spot for future reference because the bass will often school in that location.

So the next time you decide to fish the fall season, look for the diving birds and you just may find that catch of a lifetime.
