Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 10/23/2010: Bass Fishing Relaxation or Frustration

Most bass anglers consider a fishing trip a way to relax. It takes them from the stressful work environment to the serene outdoors. Remember the saying: "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work" a phrase that often invokes the fisherman into going fishing. Fishing can be one of the best stress relievers in the world. The casual bass angler just needs to get outdoors and enjoy nature and catching a lot of fish is just a bonus.

On the flip side tournament bass fishermen can be fraught with frustration and headaches. The tournament fisherman has an entirely different mindset needing to finish high in the standings or else. Catching 1 or 2 bass is not what the tournament fisherman expects from a good fishing trip as their expectations are much higher. A low catch rate either during pre fishing or during the actual tournament can lead to higher stress levels than experienced at work. In fact, tournaments are often work for the professional angler!

So what's my point? Tournament fishermen should reflect on why they are fishing especially when the fishing is tough. Most will reflect on their childhood and the memorable moments they had with their father, siblings or friends. They'll remember that big un they caught or the day they caught 50 + fish. Thoughts will wander to the stream or lake that Dad took 'em to. They may remember the day that Dad showed how to tie a Polamar or improved clinch knot. These reflections can reduce your stress levels and make you realize that you are fishing tournaments because you love fishing and winning a tournament is just icing on the cake.

The next time you fish a tournament and the outcome isn't what you expected, reflect on why you fish and I'm sure it will bring a smile to your face :)
