Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 10/31/09: Life Jackets for Bass Fishermen

Fishermen of all ages often neglect one very important item during a fishing trip and that is not wearing your life jacket. I recently fell out of my boat while using the trolling motor with fall weather clothes on and if it weren't for my partner I could have been another boating statistic.

The most likely reason that people don't put on their lifejackets is that they are bulky and during the summer very hot and uncomfortable. However, with today's wide array of inflatable life jackets those excused are long gone.

They are a variety of manufacturers and styles of inflatable life jackets but the key is to purchase an auto inflatable style. This style will self inflate when submerged and keep your head above the waterline. The auto inflatable ones also have a manual pull cord "just in case".

If you are strapped for cash, you may opt for the belt style but most of these I have seen are manual inflation. So if you are a poor swimmer or if you hit your head on the way into the water, these probably won't help you much.

If you can't afford the inflatable then I highly recommend wearing your standard jacket, but as you know the heat of summer will often be unbearable while wearing one of these.

For your safety and your partners safety, please use a life jacket even if your only using the trolling motor! Until next time, Tight Lines and read all of our tips as I'm sure you'll be doing more catching with less fishing.
