Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 12/22/08: Predicting the Spawning Season

One of the toughest things to learn in the southern states is when to change your fishing methods from winter deep water techniques to shallow spring spawn methods. Some of the key factors for the switch include: The length of the cold period in weeks, the current water temperature and if any recent cold fronts have crossed your fishing area. Let's examine them one by one.

1- The Length of the Cold Period- In the southern states like Florida and Texas a length of approximately a month or more of cold followed by a warming trend can trigger a spawn. Just recently Florida had significant cold fronts coming through starting in mid October which which is highly unusual, then in mid December a lack of severe cold fronts and a gradual warming trend sent the bass on the beds.

Unfortunately I did not adjust to this change and was fishing winter techniques with Carolina rigs and deep diving crankbaits during a one day tournament. I caught several shorts and only had one keeper to my name. At weigh in many limits were caught with some nice fish laden with roe. After talking to many fishermen they all admitted to fishing the beds.

2- Water Temperature-  When water temperature is gradually rising, the magic number is 65-67 degrees and the spawn will begin. Look for this temperature in the shallows between 2 to 3 foot of water.

3- Recent Cold Fronts- Even if the fish started or were deeply into their reproductive cycle, a hard cold front will send them completely off their beds. If it isn't followed by a significant warming trend they will stay off until the temperatures start to reach the magic number.

So if you have examined the 3 factors listed and they are favorable don't hesitate to look for the spawners even in December otherwise you may miss out on a great day of fishing!
