Open Water Tips

Bass fishing open water in central and south Florida is no rocket science. For the deeper lakes that go from 15-35 feet deep, use your depthfinder to look for underwater humps, deep weedbeds and dropoffs.

My favorite rigs for this type of fishing are diving crankbaits and Carolina rigs. I find that moving the crankbait or Carolina rig from deep to shallow works better. This is because the lure keeps in more contact with the bottom structure.

A real good sign that the spot you found is good is finding baitfish on your depthfinder screen. A hump/dropoff or deep weedbeds with baitfish in the area is ideal for migratory bass to setup an ambush.

If the water is fairly clear like Lake June, use a fluorocarbon line as this greatly reduces the visibility to the fish.
