Fishing Local Ponds for Bass

Florida pond fishing has to be one of the more relaxing ways to catch bass in Florida. Successful pond fishermen have an approach that is a little different from their buddies who fish from boats. Let's look at a few.

Your approach to the shoreline should be quiet and you need to minimize your shadow that is cast on the water. The quiet approach prevents fish in close proximity to your location from spooking off. Your shadow also spooks fish as the bass will think you are a predator such as a heron or other shoreline bird.

Cast parallel to the shore for more strikes. Many bass in ponds relate directly to shoreline cover and structure since many of these ponds lack structure near the center. Cast beyond any points along the shore and work the lure by this point. This often results in nice strikes and increases your percentage of casts versus strikes.

Use more subtle lures such as plastic worms, soft jerkbaits and Rapalas. The pond bass is more easily spooked than lake bass, and noisy baits generally do not work as well.

Cast to any visible structure. Structure is very limited in ponds, and bass will relate to any type of structure. If you happen to feel structure that is not visible on your retrieve, work this area thoroughly before moving on.

Follow these techniques for pond fishing and you'll enjoy more catching with less fishing!
