Rods-Modulus Selection

What is Modulus in Rods? Well, what I'm referring to is the Elastic Modulus or Young's Modulus of the rod. The elastic modulus in engineering terms is the rate change of stress per unit strain. In other words, for a given deflection of the rod, a force (stress/cross sectional area of the rod) results. So what am I talking about? The Elastic Modulus is simply the stiffness of the rod.

So why all the fuss of using Elastic Modulus (Modulus of Elasticity) instead of just stating "Rod- Stiffness Selection"? It's just another piece of information you can use when shopping around for a good quality rod. Some manufacturers will publish the properties of their construction material, and if you know what the elastic modulus is, you can make a better choice in selecting the rod you want.

OK, so what rod stiffness is the right one? That depends on what style of bass fishing you are doing. Here's how I choose:

1- Soft plastics/jigs- High modulus rods are my preference. They will exert more force into the hook when you "rear" back on a fish. You will also benefit from greater "feel" of what the worm/craw/lizard is doing due to the greater stiffness.

2- Diving Crankbaits- Low modulus rods are preferred and even fiberglass can be used. This allows the fish to inhale the bait and prevent/minimize short strikes. I often go for a spinning rig due to the "whippy" action of the tip.

3- Spinnerbaits/topwaters/buzzbaits- Medium modulus rods are the choice here. You need fair hook setting action, but want the fish to suck in the bait.

Pick the right stiffness of rod and you'll enjoy more catching with less fishing!
