Subject: Gamakatsu EWG Superline Hooks

Hello again!

First off i want to thank you for the previous help you gave me via email a couple of
weeks ago. I love soaking up knowledge from more experienced fisherman like yourself(hope i am not bothering you). I was on lake Istokpoga this Sat and i had an amazing day! I tried some of the lilli pad techniques on your site and landed a 5lb 3oz bass on a craw lure in thick pads. About three hours later i was pitchin one of the weed lines you have listed on your site and i got a hit from what appeared to be ATLEAST an 8lb bass! I pitched about 15ft from the boat into a clump of isolated bullrush when it hit. I set the hook and it came up and shook its head. I pulled hard and finally got it out and as it shook right at the boat side it got off. My hook was completely straightened out, i almost wanted to cry! Here is what i was using:

St. Croix Mojo rod 7' MH/F
Abu Garcia Revo Premier
17lb trilene smooth cast
Gamakatsu 4/0 EWG hook-1/4 Tungsten weight

I know this is not the most powerfull set-up and maybe thats why i could'nt penetrate the hook or something. My question is about the Gamakatsu EWG Superline hooks. Alot of people recommended them to me so i bought some in 4/0 and 5/0 this weekend. I am also hearing that the only way to set the hook with them is using braid? I personally hate braid and will never use it! Is this true or can mono and fluorocarbon set them as well? Now, here is my new set-up i just bought this weekend. Please tell me what you think and if this is and adequate combo to avoid losing anymore hawgs.

Team All Star Big Boy flippin stick 7' 6" H/F
Abu Garcia Revo STX(24lb drag)
20lb Bass Pro XPS fluorocarbon line
Gamakatsu superline EWG hooks

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated! THANKS AGAIN for everything!

LUIS A. TAMBUNGA

Luis,

On your missed fish were you using the standard EWG or superline EWG because there is a big difference in wire gage. For flipping heavy cover the superline EWG is the way to go. Also once you get the fish out of cover let him/her pull some drag by either loosening the drag or free spool with thumb pressure if it surges. This relieves the pressure on the hook. It'll take you a while to learn how to do this during the fight but you can save many fish from either straightening the hook or simply tearing out their tissue then losing it.

Your new rig looks great and you chose a great lake to fish (much better than Arbuckle these days).

About posting my email, yes sir you can. Any email from me you can use on your page. I was using the standard EWG Gamakatsu hook. My problem is that no matter how many fish i hook i always get an adrenaline rush when i feel that bite and i rush things too much! So you are saying that i can get a good hook set with the superline hooks and fluorocarbon? Some say that the heavier gauge makes it impossible to set the hook with anything but braid! I have learned so much from your website in just a couple of weeks! Thanks for making such a down to earth site that relates to places that i can actually go and fish. I absolutely love Istokpoga now!

Luis,

You'll do fine with fluoro or mono in 20 pound plus. The reason is there is very little line stretch when pitching/flippin since a relatively small amount of line is out. I'm like you, I just never liked the feel of braid going through the guides. Best of luck and look for your emails on my testimonials page soon :)

Brand new bass fanatic here, fishing since April and looking for knowlege.  Great website I'm learning a ton just by reading it.  I took the day off work to fish the days around a full moon.  1)Is the moon/solunar table thing for real?  2)Does it matter what I fish on these days or do the fish just jump in the boat?

First off ,let me tell you ,that i really enjoy your web site very informational. i have one question. i did alot of fishing up in wisconsin, illionois area pretty much all my life and had great success. i moved to the Tampa Bay area a year ago and i live in a community that has ponds all over. these ponds are area retention ponds but have bass in them. i've caught several bass useing bettle spins 1/4 oz. . these ponds seem to have no structure on the bottom and most of the shore line has weeds and some lilly pads. i am wandering if you could give me a couple of tips to catching more fish and larger fish? most of the ponds are gin clear. can you help?

Hi Joe,

Glad you enjoyed my site. You may have missed this page on the site: http://www.floridabassfishing.us/Pond%20Bass%20Fishing%20in%20Florida.htm which is about pond fishing in Florida.

My best luck has been on the Zoom Fluke weightless in solid white and the Zoom trickworm in Junebug (purple with green fleck). Walmart has both of these baits. Work the ponds by casting parallel to the shoreline rather than always toward the middle. Pond bass relate to the shoreline cover unless there is cover in the middle. I hope this helps Joe...Paul

I want to thank you for the tips you gave me on catching more bass from the retention ponds, i've had very good results. first day , caught 4 bass largest was 3 LBS, 2nd day- i went out later in the day and made a couple of cast and wammo! i hooked a solid fish. heres a picture of my fish. Thanks again and tight lines, Joe

hi, it's joe again, just thought you'd like to see the bass my wife
caught tonight at one of the ponds in our neighborhood, she was using
the worm i was telling you about, but it was black w/red tail, she had
quite the time getting the fish in, it was quite comical. thanks again
for the tips. it has made our fishing more rewarding. joe

Paul,
Thanks for the info.  We went to gobletts in the morning without much success, although we got some bites working a watermelon fluke in the pads just above the hydrilla.  Went to the the locks like you said but didn't have luck.  I think its because they stopped letting water out.  Also, caught a few between Mackinson island and grenada ramp in the afternoon.  My son threw a junebug finesse worm on a drop shot in only 3 feet of water.  I couldn't believe it.  The problem is that none of these fish were keepers. As it stands, we are going to start our tourny next Saturday throwing at the pads at the back of goblitts.  We will end at the drop shot place.  I hope we can catch some keepers.

Thanks again.

Great site you got here man. Thank you very much for the information. I have used it at several lakes in the area and have found your tips to be very helpful. I was wondering if you have ever fished Lake Panasoffkee and could shed some light on this lake for me? I hear that it has only recently returned to decent fishable status and could use some tips if you have any....
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance,

"Double D"

Sorry David (Double D),

I haven't fished that lake so I can't offer any help there. Just curious, what lakes did you fish that are on my site? Again, all my spots are real, but time of year is key...Paul

I have fished Lakes Reedy, June in Winter, Kissimmee, West Toho, Harris, and Tarpon. I live about 10 minutes from Tarpon so have fished that one several times. I have caught fish in several of the spots that you have highlighted on your site. Thank you so much for having the willingness and taking the time to post your good fortune to share with other fishing enthusiasts....David

Had a good outing last weekend out on Lake Pierce, finishing 2nd with big bass honors, and edged out of 1st by 1/10th of an ounce! DRATS!

I found my fish escaping the main lake pressure in a very shallow residential canal on the north end of the lake. Dead sticking stick baits and letting then get a good soaking before pulling them back to the boat.

Big bass was 4.7, and I had a 3lb'er to help out, then followed 3 dinks for a total weight of 11.4 lbs.

Thanks Paul for the tips, as this was my first time on Pierce and needed all the help I could get!  GEEKD4BASS

Heyas all. Found this site through the connecting great sites. Im newer to the area near the Highlands lakes....(Moved into Labelle last July) after previously only saltwater fishing for many years Ive made the switch with my son to Bass fishing due to the better availability etc. Great info on these forums and connecting sites in particular. Ill make sure to check in daily hehe. Greg C.

I just read over your site and found it greatly informative!  I was
wondering if you could answer a question for me.  I'm heading down to visit
my mom on Siesta Key for a week and I was wondering if I should bring a few
rods and tackle.  My question is: can you shore fish at Apac Lake / Cooper
Park?  Or are there canoe rentals available?

Thanks in advance for your help!  If you ever need any info on Lake Ontario
or the Finger Lakes in NY, feel free to ask!

Best regards,

Fred in Western NY
