Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 01/02/08: Fishing Soft Plastics

Bass fishing soft plastics is the key to a successful fishing trip for many anglers. The key to fishing them is when, where and how.

Soft plastics can be deadly in catching the largemouth bass and the best time is just about anytime of the year. Soft plastics such as tubes and lizards are very good in the spring for bedding fish. Worms and craw imitations are great for summer casting, pitching or flippin'. The soft jerkbait plastics like the Zoom Fluke are excellent baits for the fall. The worm and craw can be very good in the winter months in Florida, especially after a cold front and flipped through heavy cover.

The soft plastic lures can be used in a variety of situations. Emergent weed lines such as cattails and bulrush are excellent places to cast and pitch worms or craw baits. Submerged vegetation such as hydrilla, coontail or peppergrass are also good choices for casting worms and flukes. Deepwater structure such as humps, drops and deep weeds are great for worms Carolina style.

So how do you fish the soft plastics. Try the Texas rig for medium to shallow cover. The Carolina rig is a deep water technique, but very deadly! The Soft Jerkbait rig is also very effective. Try using these rigs by pitching, flippin or casting.
