Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 01/17/08: Trolling Motor Selection: Hand Control or Foot Control

Trolling motor selection for bass fishing is critical for an anglers success. A major decision is whether you choose a hand control or foot control motor.

There are advantages and disadvantages for each type and I list them as follows:

Foot Control

Advantages

1- The foot control motor leaves your hands free to cast and reel.

2- The speed control and steering is done by the foot.

3- Easy to keep a steady course.

Disadvantages

1- Cables may freeze virtually leaving your motor unusable.

2- Cables bulky and foot control bulky often getting in the way.

3- Foot control may bounce on deck.

Hand Control

Advantages

1- Compact, no bulky cables.

2- No cables to break/freeze.

Disadvantages

1- Often using hands and can interfere with casting/fishing time.

2- Bending over to adjust hand throttle can lead to lower back fatigue.

Selection of the trolling motor type is very important and what's important to you may not be important to someone else. Remember the advantages and disadvantages of each type before you make your final decision.

Select the right trolling motor for you and I'm sure you'll be doing more catching with less fishing!
