Bass Fishing Tip of the Week 02/06/08: Bass Boat Prop Selection

Bass boat prop selection is important to performance and here's a general list on proper prop selection:

1- If you are needing a good hole shot i.e. the ability to get on plane quick you need to lower your pitch. For instance, if you are running a 26" pitch prop, drop down to 25' or 24" pitch. Usually you want this for fishing very shallow waters, very weedy waters or pulling skiers. Just remember when you do go to a lower pitched prop, you usually loose some top end speed, but gain rpm. Be careful and don't overly under pitch a prop as you can exceed the manufacturer's recommended rpms.

2- If you are looking for great top end speed you need to increase your pitch. This will give you more distance traveled per prop revolution. This is nice for those long hauls. Just remember, over pitching to the extreme will reduce "hole" shot and may cause the engine to severely lug.

3- The ideal prop is usually between the 2 extremes, so consult a dealer or prop specialist to give you some ideas. Another possibility is to carry an extra one with a lower or higher pitch in your boat storage so you can swap it out when needed.
